Silly carbs.... DCOE update 120-130

I guess there ain't really a place to start... considering this 'll be a fairly short one.

I've been sitting on this pair of DCOE webers now for a couple weeks. Didn't have a new manifold gasket. That gave me time to do my best efforts at port matching the manifold... and admiring them carbs.

Came down from the mountain this morning to find a box from IPD on the porch. Tore it open immediately of course, and found my new gaskets.. And happily, the intake ports matched those on my cylinder head. No cutting required. Bolt on that exhaust manifold.

Bolt on them carbs.

Couldn't really help myself. I had the carbs bolted on there, though I hadn't really thought about the linkage. But I had to give it a try. I had a friend twist the key, myself being under the hood operating the choke and/or throttle.

The motor fired pretty quick, but ran very rough, and gas was dumping gas out of the rear-most carb's float vent hole. It was pouring.

I figured it was a stuck float valve, so I pulled the cover. All seemed OK.Float seemed to be operating fine. Then I noticed a square brass rod sitting in the bottom of the float bowl... Couldn't figure out where it went, so into the book I went. I guess its referred to as a "stuffing ball" which holds a "pump valve ball".

Anyhow, someone had made their own "stuffing ball" out a screw with a ground off head. I took that out, and replaced it with the part I found floundering about in the bowl. Put the float cover back on knowing full well I'd fixed nothing.

I did NOTHING to repair the fuel leak.

BUT, again I had my assistant crank the motor over, and she started right up, settled into a smooth ~900rpm idle, and sounded great!

Then came time to hook the gas pedal to the carbs... Looked complex, but a quick pontification session, and I had the plan. Won't go into the details.

Once I had the gas pedal hooked up, I went for a test run...then another....then another.

All I can say is.... damn! I'm sold on these Webers. She pulls better from every RPM range than ever before... Be it a low RPM 4th gear tug starting at 20 mph, or a high RPM 2nd pull starting at 40mph.

And it idles better than ever before...hot or cold.

I reckon I might have got lucky. I also might have some jetting to do to get 'em set up right. But for now, she's running better than any OHV volvo I've ever driven, so I'm not inclined to start changing things....

Of course, I've only got about 5 miles in so far.....
