If you really want to kill the alternator and drive on the battery alone, you could take the ground wire off the alternator.

I'm not certain you could get 20 miles out of a fully charged battery.

No lights, no fan, no radio, no air conditioning, maybe.

Also, in order to measure current flow (amps) you have to have the meter in series with the load (we are talking big wires here if the current is over a few amps). Or, have a calibrated shunt in series with the load and measure the voltage across the shunt.

New/rebuilt alternator with new regulator is pretty easy to install.
