Spark plug 'rings/spacers'... 140-160 1968

I have been using Bosch Platinums for the past 2-3 months, (against the BB's advice,) but I've had no problems with them so far. I was told that they would probably foul faster than regular plugs(on a not efficient carburated engine that is), and that they wouldn't be worth the money. As far as them fouling, that has not happened so far. I also replaced the coil and the plug wires when I installed them, so I don't know if they created the "smootherness". But any way, the reason for this post is because they came with rings/spacers that were on them when I got them, I left them on because I thought they were supposed to be there and possibly help with sealing. Recently on the BB I saw somewhere that you shouldn't use plug spacers because they would move the spark away from the cylinder, causing harder starting/worse combustion, (which totally makes sense to me). SO, are these the "spacers" that I shouldn't be using, or are they supposed to be there???
Thanks guys,
Kyle
