AW's, torque converters and trouble shooting

It was a little late last night. I do have a 71L but it has markings on the bell housing that make me think that it was replaced instead of "rebuilt" as the wife of the deceased previous owner suggested.

Unfortunately, I have a 71 Chevy pickup with a 350 V8 that I put overdrive and fuel injection in that has approximatly the same over all gear ratio as the Volvo that gets close to the same gas mileage. I don't expect it to get 51 that is honda/toyota hybrid and volks diesel territory or even my mothers 95 caddy (with a 4.1 V8) that gets 28 on the highway; I do want to make it get the best mileage that it will get. I am not a heavy footed driver and I understand that this car is not rated to get wonderfull mileage but I would like to optomise.

A similar but more sleekly designed car is the Buick Park Ave which is rated at 17 29 with 65 more hp and another liter in the 6.

Seems like some people are getting closer to 25 on the highway than the 20 I get now. Some people street race, I race the gallon.

I thought if someone has some experience with the lock up function and diagnosing related problems this board is the place to find them.

Thanks for your suggestions and help

Dan
