I really don't "know" But I did read right here on the brickboard quite a while ago, that someone actually met a design guy that had worked for Volvo and asked this very question, the response was that in the event of a rear impact it reduced the chance of the exaust system entering the passenger compartment.
I have no way of knowing if this is right but I did see it here. I remember it well because I had wondered the same thing for quite some time.
