Front Bumper Bumped 700 1989

A couple of weeks ago, my wife's 744 had a little bump with an SUV. Broke the right side parking light, (already replaced) and pushed the energy absorbing bumper shock on that side pretty much all the way in. Other than a few holes in the rubber covering the bumper, there was no other damage.

The local body shop offered to fix it for a mere $2,800. Seems to me that I should be able to uncompress the bumper shock somehow, patch the rubber and save about $2,799. The body is in excellent shape otherwise.

Is this possible?

Thanks
