I bet if you could find a decent D-20, the 5 cyl version that came in the earlier 240's, it would probably fit.

I have no idea if the newer vw tdi engines will bolt up to a bellhousing for a d-24 or not, but those new 4 cyl put out about as much as a D-24 6 cyl.
You would have to fit all of the electronics for a newer engine though
