Retrieving fault codes; Volvo Self-Daignostics
1. Locate Diagnostic Units. On the 960, these are little black plastic enclosures about 1"x2.5" size on the Left (drivers) side under the hood, mounted near the strut tower.
2. Carefully open the little cover. It has a a little catch along the side. Pull the cover off and let it hang by its litle plastic band thru the end. On the 960, there are two of these diagnotic units, "A" & "B". I think you want "A" for the engine.
3. There is a little jumper wire test lead with a plug connector in it which should be inserted into a hole in the cover. Pull the connector out of the retaining hole in the cover and plug it into the engine diagnotic position, which should be position "2". This is dignotic position "A-2".
4. After the jumper is plugged in to the right position, you are ready to retrieve the stored codes. To do this, turn the key to ON, then go back to the diagnostic unit.
5. Press the little button on the unit for 1 to 3 sec, then count the LED flashes. These will be three single digit numbers with a pause between the numbers. You will retrieve one code at a time and WRITE THEM DOWN. To move on to the next code, repeat this step. When you have got all of the codes, you will see a repeat of the first code; like a tape loop going around & around again.
6. To clear the codes, you must hold the little button down for >5 sec; release it and wait for the LED to go on momentarily, then hold the button down again for >5 sec. After you ahve done this, if you retrieve the codes as cited in step (5), you should get "1-1-1" which means "no faults". The system will not write new fault codes until the car is driven and warmed up.
Note: I don't know all of the positions, but "A-1" is for the transmission and "A-2" is for the engine.
