Why does my automatic take so long to hit OD? 200 1991

Hi everyone. I picked up a '91 245 2 months ago and have started getting into fixing all the little things that were neglected by the original owner. The car is in really good mechanical condition. The guy had receipts from the dealers for all the major stuff that was done. It drove me nuts trying to replace all the mini-lamps burned out on the switches, etc. I even got the seat heaters to work.
Anyway, what I need to know is why the automatic doesn't want to hit OD until after I drive 20-30 miles. It seems to be getting worse as it gets colder. It works fine after it finally engages. The disengage switch functions OK and the kickdown works like it should, but only after I have driven for a long time.
TIA for any help you guys can give me. This forum rocks!
