Danny,
This may be a long shot, but I had the same problem. It started by not staying in third occasionally and gradually got worse, to the point where the slightest bump in the road would drop it out of third. The problem turned out to be that the detent balls and springs had gummed up. I found out when I turned the box upside down and the ball for third didn't fall out. A couple of squirts of carb cleaner solved the problem.
