A lot of 240's will develop the problem you describe. I am thinking the problem may well be with the mechanism itself. Really, that system is a safty related system, but I am not convinced it is worth the hassel or expense involved. My best advise to you is to just get rid of it. If you live on a hill and have small kids, maybe you should get it fixed, but otherwise the thing seems pretty useless to me.
