I can't remember exactly, I think the one-way clutch is engaged in all gears EXCEPT 5th/OD and the friction clutch is engaged in 5th/OD with the one-way overrunning. It almost sounds like the friction clutch is stuck on/engaged (would make using reverse a bad plan). If the one-way clutch was damaged, I doubt a rebuild (seals, etc) will do you any good. In my OD at ~198k, the one-way clutch broke into about 10 pieces (there was supposedly a manufacturing defect in some OD units around the time mine was made) and it had weird grinding and other symptoms. You'll know right away what happened if you pull the OD and take a look inside...
