AW72 700 1989

A 1989 740 16-valve should have the AW72 transmission in that. It is very similar to the AW71, and most of the AW71 information will apply. I believe that the AW72 has an electric overdrive and possibly lockup, both of which are different from the AW71 of that year.

I would encourage you to read the brickboard FAQ for a better understanding of your vehicle and it's various quirks, etc. Right now, the AW70/71 transmission section will be of the most help to you. Within the transmission section, there's a section covering Hard Shifts and this will have the information you're looking for.

Hopefully, a synthetic flush and a kick-down cable adjustment (or replacement) will solve the problem. If that doesn't work, you'll need to pull the valve body and replace the 15C check ball. Make sure you have the Volvo shop manual that covers these repairs (TP31642/1), and you should be able to order just the necessary gaskets from your Volvo dealer without ordering an entire transmission gasket kit (about $65). The check ball itself (1377746-1) is about $2.30, and I would also strongly encourage changing your tailshaft bushing and seal while you're performing this work.

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.
