Yes, check the wiring first. Is this an external regulator system? I returned "life time" rebuilt alternators twice. Turned out the regulator was making surges in the alternators excitation current and was blowing the diodes. If you get another slternator, you may want to try the full field test first with the external regulator unplugged. If its ok then get another regulator.
