Well I think that you may have two unrelated problems. As for the shift quality, the first course of action is probably to do a fluid flush. You can find out how to do it yourself in the FAQs, or you can get a mechanic to do it. If the fluid quality is poor then you are likely to find some improvement in performance.
If the OD relay seems to work, you may want to check the selenoid. It is also covered in the FAQs.
