Two years ago the rear end blew up on my 71 145. When I opened the inspection plate one of the large steel pins that keep the spider gears in place had worked its way out and ended up lodging into the rotating gears as the car was driving.
My suggestion to you is to take off the inspection plate and make sure everything is in the right place and rotating properly.
I do agree that it is more than likely a suspension issue I just wanted to pass on my experence.
