The distributor is the usual suspect and you were right to change it. Does the new one look decent or is it just as cruddy as the one you pulled out? I guess they're all old now anyway. You *might* not have gotten the plug fully plugged in, so check that carefully- that location is kind of a pain.
The other thing I'd replace, and it's a DEFINITE no-start when it fails, is the ignition power stage. This is the module in the LF fender- you said you changed it for a used one? Try a new one.
One or the other of these things is going bad on you and the used part is no better than the old ones you had.
I replaced the dist in my wife's 88 740 NA a couple of years ago, with intermittent no-start problems. Cured it 100%, just cost money. The installation is easy at least.
