Steve,
I'll add a vote for having a good look at the water pump. Here is what happened to my 1995 945na with 109k miles...........
I returned to the car after a 10-15 min errand to find a large and growing puddle of coolant. The water pump was leaking like crazy. Car had been running like a top with normal temp and noises. So I limped home stopping every 2-4 miles to check and add water. The ferry boat guys looked annoyed at the mess the car made. Anyhow, i changed the pump, etc etc and all is well. Added a Low Coolant Light too, Thanks to Steve Ringlee's great instructions in the FAQ's.
The day before I noticed one drop of coolant looking stuff on the floor but did not see anything around the pump then. My pump failed more or less all at once. If the parking lot had bee tilted the other way I could have easily overheated the engine.
A lot of us here on the board like working on our cars and can do things when they really need doing. I'd hate to think of the cost to have the dealer change the belt then (x)months later change the pump then (y)months later change the seals.
You're definitely on the right track wanting to take good care of your car. This is a great place for help.
My 2c.
