The dexcool didn't cause coolant leaks, but dexcool can cause problems if installed in a leaky system, or if it is used in a system run low on coolant.
Also, it finds leaks where typically there may not be any (or one might not see any). Sometimes filling with yellow will eliminate the leaks. It has received a bad rap because GM couldn't build a cooling system in which the stuff would work properly (but other carmakers could). They seem to have it worked out now.
Also, it crusts worse than green when given the opportunity.
