Thanks for all the response. After driving the car a bit more I'm starting to think its just when the engine supplies braking action through the drivetrain. The affect is probably also amplified by an old exhaust system. Just a deep exhaust note. Something that wouldn't happen with my Sedan due to the automatic tranny.
