Shoulda popped in a head gasket too and REALLY had some fun... :-) Getting past the exhaust manifold etc. can be the worst part of replacing it, if it's anywhere near due.
Hopefully the same shmo who previously did the exhaust gaskets wasn't the last one to touch THAT!
