Theses transmissions are very stout if not abused and the fluid is changed occassionally.
I would perform a web search for Volvo recyclers and try to find an AW30-40 with about 60-75K miles on it and and not worry about rebuilding it (as long as they offer some sort of warranty on the trans.).
I would have your mechanic change out the PNP sensor on the 'new' transmission, install new dino atf and run it that way for about 5K miles. If no problems with it, then I'd have the tranny flushed with Synthetic atf like M1 or Amsoil.
You rarely hear of these trannies failing with below 100k miles on them unless they have been abused. With atf changes these trannies are lasting well into the 200's with regular maintenance.
