740 kick-down cable giving me fits

The transmission kick-down cable in our '91 740 automatic needed replacement. Ordered the cable from FCPGroton (great price) and my son went at the installation. He and car are in NH, while I am in Boston, so some of the following is second hand. Initial problem was getting the plastic retainer into its hole in the transmission housing, and finally had to remove some of the plastic to reduce the size of part so it could be forced into place. After, it does seem to be in proper location and seated fine with O-ring in place, but we were suprised that it wasn't a bit easier to get in there. Real problem then surfaced - the new cable seems to be between one and two inches too long, and we run out of threads in the adjustment before getting enough of the slack out of new cable. At its tightest setting, car will shift into fourth only if you let off gas, and will then downshift back to third under even light load. If we back off the adjustment (more slack), it stays in lower gears ever more. We then measured the old cable at 43.5 inches tip to tip of the actual cable, not the housing, and found that the spec for the new cable is about 44.5 (per package, and also per folks at FCPGroton). They say there is only one cable spec for all 1991-1992 740's, although there are different sources which look somewhat different. The old cable was starting to fail by separating at the adjustment ernd, but it still allowed the transmission to operate properly just before it was removed, so the problem is guarranteed to be something to do with the cable installation or the cable elngth. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts to share that might help us out here? Thanks.
