When cam sprockets are aligned with marks on the head, piston #1 should be at TDC on the compression stroke (all valves closed and piston at the top. Notch on crank pulley should line up with 0 degree mark on timing cover. If your timing belt is marked with white lines, the single lines are for the cam sprockets while the double line is for aligning with the crank pulley. Mine had an alignment mark on the block that you could see when looking down from the front of the engine. Chiltons manual (from library) had a decent photo. Haynes was not as clear if I remember right. Be very careful turning the crank. Take plugs out and any resistance means you may be hitting valves with pistons. Good luck.
