Thanks everyone! I really thought I remembered reading some sort of caution about storing a flywheel, but I must have been wrong. Didn't make much sense, but I never would have though a crank needed to be stored on its end either.
I'm going to clean it up a little with brake cleaner and then smear some grease on it before bagging it up. It will either be stored in my parent's garage or in my apartment on a shelf for a while, so I'll keep an eye on it, but I think it will be ok.
