UNtil just a couple of years ago they apparently have this bevel gear in the AWD system. If you let the front and rear tires get a little diameter difference (i.e. don't rotate the zealously every couple of thousand miles, or especially if you don't replace all 4 at the same time if one goes bad) then it creates a rotational difference which will fairly quickly eat up that bevel gear. To the tune of several thousand dollars.
Later model ones apparently had the bright idea of replacing the throttle cable (~$20) with an electronic throttle actuator (Marelli). Which goes out apparently with some regularity at the cost of several hunnert bucks.
