Buying a Used 93' 940 Engine described as 'dirty inside'

I found an engine out of a 93' 940 (B230 non-turbo) to replace the one which blew in my 91' 740 a few weeks ago. It is described as dirty inside (lots of crud in the valve cover) with 88K miles. The junkyard selling it seems honest and will sell it for $400 with a 90 day non-labor warranty. I believe the mileage but my question is, where should I look for wear to determine damage to the engine? Is camshaft lobe wear a good indicator, should I pull a main or rod bearing cap (assuming I can do this), or what would you folks look at? I guess it has 185-190 lbs compression.

Also, how can I tell if it is a type K or L engine?

Thanks!
