Tranny fluid is always a good idea if you don't know how long it's been in there. It might very well help with the slipping in reverse.

I removed the TB on mine for the first time a couple of weekends ago and it wasn't as difficult as I expected. PB Blaster penetrating oil soaking into the threads for a couple hours helped. It didn't seem that dirty inside, although I have nothing to compare it to. Still, it's a nice feeling to accomplish the job! Good luck.
