Found the engine problem - not a broken rod 200

Thanks, all, for the advice.

The valve did not hit the piston to my knowledge - there looks to be no damage to either the valve head or piston.

All of the vacuum lines have been done within the last year, as have the water pump and the 'stat. I'll clean out the oil seperator before I put everything together. As far as surfacing the head, that sounds expensive and prone to problems. If I stick the head on a glass sheet and check for warpage with a feeler gauge, and find that the head is within spec, can I get away with not surfacing?

Thanks,
-b.
