About 25 years ago I used Ford 272 V8 pistons for an overbore. It was cheaper to buy 8 forged pistons than the IPD pistons and a lot less expensive than the Volvo Mahle pistons. They were rather long pistons so I had a machinist friend cut about an inch or so off untill they matched the Volvo piston in length. Had to reem the Volvo rod slightly so that the Ford bushing would fit. The deck height was a little lower but it was a street/autocross motor so I did not want the compression ratio sky high. Did some head work, R cam, headers, homemade exhaust and dropped it into a 544. It was a screamer, had a ball with that car.
I found a set of SU H6's off of a Truimph TR3 that worked great. They were about an 1" to an 1.5" longer than Volvo HS6 and really had incredible throttle response. Had to modify the linkage so that the carb rod pulled up instead of pushing down. It idled at about 1500 or 1600 rpm with the SU's. I tried a set of 45 mm Solex carbs and the idle dropped to 1000 rpm. It didn't sound nearly as wicked as the SU's.
I also tried a set of HD8's from a Jaguar. From about 80mph and up it would really haul the freight but without any needles to experiment with I gave up on that combination.
This was a 6 bolt B20 by the way.
Opps!!!! Time to go.
