brain 200 1990

My 1990 240 volvo was sporatically stalling, it would just die with seems like you just turned the ignition off. Car would restart afetr about 20 seconds.
My mechanic cound not find anything but replaced the "brain" which seemed to work. Question , what component is the brain.
