fuel pump relay question 700 1990

Hi all - was wondering if I'm on the wrong track, '90 740 GLE was not starting but cranking. Think it was fuel filter AND relay - changed filter in parking lot and wiggled relay to get home. Pulled into drive, car dies and will not even crank. Couple hours later will crank again but not turn over. Will a bad relay cause the non-cranking or just the non-turning over? Thank you so much! -Ali
