964 trunk S90-V90

I assume the A/C was in "normal" not recirculate mode at the time? If so I would expect this feature in a Volvo. The A/C -heater sucks air in from the front of the car and it needs to go somewhere. I think if you investivate you will find an "exhaust" door to the outside similar in function to a clothes dryer vent in the outer lower corners of the trunk. (There are some in my 965). The air flow is designed to "flush" through the car to prevent any possibility of CO accumulation.

Older and maybe "other" cars rely on air "leaks" through the doors etc.
