740: heavy clutch

Hi,
I bought a really nice '86 740 a couple of days ago. Everything works great, except: the clutch pedal is real heavy to depress. After being used to the hydraulic clutch of the 940 currently being run as our family car, the 740 demands quite the effort to depress the clutch pedal. Is this normal? If not, is there anything I should look closer at? The clutch itself works fine, but there is a slight creaking sound when depressing the pedal.
