HELLLLLP Volvo gurus!!

OK Volvo geniuses, I think I've got a challenge for you. I have a 1984 Volvo 244 DIESEL (very rare as you know!) that was in great shape when I bought it 2 years ago, only has 90,000 miles on it.

I love this car... but about a year ago it began to act like it was running out of gas at odd times, especially when it was cold. This began to get worse with time. Soon after that I began to smell gas fumes that intensified when the "running out of gas" symptom occurred (was NOT even close to being out of gas, by the way). It runs much better on a completely full tank of gas. I've changed the fuel filter and replaced most of the gas lines... to no avail.

It appears to be leaking just left of the fuel filter (passenger side) of the engine, underneath in that general area, the exact position of the leak is hard to determine. (That's where the fuel/injector pump is, right? Just found that out in Chiltons) I haven't driven it in months because I'm getting sick off the fumes. Diesel mechanics here in Denver are scared of this car.

(In the picture you can see that the fuel leaks onto the rear timing belt and that spray it all over... it's worse when driving on the highway.)

I would love to have this Volvo back, any ideas Volvo experts???

MIke

I hope those are diesel fumes and not gasoline fumes! You need to take off the clogged filter to find and fix the fuel leak.

I suggest you repost this in the rear wheel drive section and not the story section. Could you rescan the slide? Seems you have it in upside down.

hanks for the tip Klaus, I'm having some difficulty navigating this website... but I'll figure it out.

Diesel GAS of course, yes. Fuel filter is brand new.

There is a drop down menu at the top right of the screen, or select one of the topics on the right hand side.

Diesel = FUEL. Gasoline = gas.
