amazon engine swap, steering shaft issues

I'm installing a 4.3 chev v6 into a 64 amazon. I have photos of another swap that I'm using for a reference. The photos show that a very radical custom exhaust header was made to clear the steering shaft. The guy told me there would be little use cutting down into the inner fender for extra space, because there's not much room to work in there.

Is there a safe/reliable way to move the steering shaft? I've seen it done with flex joints before- but I don't want cobble up something thats not going to work right.

Thanks
