Regina O2 Sensors 700 1990

Can someone please explain to me if my 1990, 8-valve 740GL with Regina truly requires a unique Oxygen Sensor?

I would be happy splicing in a generic replacemet 3-wire O2 Sensor, but all generics that I could find were called out as "Bosch".

I'd rather avoid the $170 for EOM style Regina if I can.

Please help...

NGK 25002 maybe? $99.85 [noon est edit update] 700 1990

A few weeks ago, I believe the NGK site (actually sparkplugs.com) listed their 25002 for the '93 940s and some 240s, in each case picturing a sensor with Red and White leads (only found on Titania sensors). I emailed NGK for clarification but got no reply.

So today I dug in and tried again. Clicking the "applications" button at this link shows the NGK-25002 this time as applying only to the 740/940 series. And at $99.85 I doubt there will be a lower price if this is the right one.

    Here's another

Here's another google hit that seems to verify the 25002 as Regina type.

Note that clicking the picture doesn't show wire colors, but defines Sparklugs as nGk, Sensors as nTk.

Well my linking skills are not good, so here's the URL:

      http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/apps/car_truck_suv/results.asp

If that doesn't work in a new window, I'm out to lunch. [no good, per Mr. Gates]
      ... hear me chew.

OK, try this one and work ahead about 3 screens (engine, pick B234 SOHC)

Thanks Bruce. I poked around the NTK site for a bunch of other years and models and can't see any reason to think that 25002 is wrong for Regina. They seem to list all th 740 B230s as 16V, but I that just looks like an oversight.

I would still love to see someone post that they bought this part and it was right and furthermore that it turned out their old one really was bad. I have started to think that the Titania ones never go bad and that's how FCP and now IPD can get away with listing the generic for both Bosch and Regina without getting the unhappy customers that would get them to change it.

Hello Andy: They may not go 'bad', but the one I recently replaced at 167k was laaazzzzzzzy. It still worked, but was verrrrry slow on the voltage swings, consequently causing a rich running condition. There was immediate improvement on instillation of the new one.

      Regina O2 Sensors 700 1990

They are very long lived, so make sure that is the problem before giving up on it. An o-scope really helps in diagnosing these.
If it does need one, FCP Groton has the OEM 'plug and play' NTK sensors for around $135.

gotta get the red wire 700 1990

Others smarter than I have researched this and I believe them. It's a lot of reading, but check out:

The good news: When you need a fuel pressure regulator, you don't have to buy the $120 one for Rex-Regina, you can use the one for LH 2.4 ($35?).

And the Other Good News.... 700 1990

You will NEVER buy an Air Mass Meter, and you only have one fuel pump to poop out.

It's true the Regina O2 sensors are more expensive, but I believe they are known for lasting longer than the Bosch units. Make certain you really need one before purchasing. Or you may even want to try one from a wrecking yard if you can get it for a song and have the time to mess with it.

The Pick-n-Pull I go to is great. Except that they cut the catalytic converters out of every car before it goes in the lot (I guess they like platinum) and so all I ever find for O2 sensors on the Regina cars is dangling red, black and white wires.

Pulling the Cats. is a Federal requirement. Not sure the reasoning, but a lot of what happens in D.C. is confusing to me...

I suppose because one of us just might think it would be OK to install a perfectly good used cat on one of our cars rather than leave on the just as used one most of us are running now. Thank goodness they save us from ourselves.
