You're probably on the right track. Crank the steering wheel all the way to one side then reach in behind the wheel and grab a hold of the verticle sway bar end link. Shake it up and down vigorously and see if you feel any play in it. If so, replace it.
Another way you can diagnose for a bad sway bar end link is to go ahead and disconnect the lower attach point and go drive the car. Just do one side of the car at a time. No noise = problem found.
