Body noise V70-XC70

My wife's 2003 XC has about 100K on it. Recently when going over a stretch of not the smoothest road we hear a knocking sound (not a rattle). A sound I would suspect a sway bar might make if a bushing was missing.
I have checked twice under the car and can see nothing missing or out of place. All bushings look there. I have taken everything out of the trunk storage areas also. Before I have a shop chase the sound:: any other places to look??? could a failing shock or strut make the sound???
