Mystery vacuum hose V70-XC70 1998

I recently purchased a 1998 v70. There are 2 vacuum hoses, the very small ones, coming out of the air filter box. One is white and the other is black. The white one goes to a unit mounted front center engine compartment, near radiator. The black one is only about 10 inches long and is just dangling there. Where should this second, vacuum hose go?

I think I have the same setup; '98 V70 N/A. The thin, hard plastic, black hose on my air box feeds around to where the air intake hose connects to the air box. To find it, follow the air intake hose from the grill area to the air box (looking from the front of the car). Just where the intake hose meets the box is where the black hose connects with a 90 degree elbow. It's difficult to see unless your in front of the car. I hope this helps.

    Happy holidays

I have been meaning to get back with you sooner on this. You are absolutely right. Thanks for sharing this with me. The littl rubber L that the hose fits to can be brittle (mine broke) I replaced it with another short length of vacuum hose -- all is back together now.
      Thanks,
      John

I had competely forgotten about this, and so do appreciate your post. I was one of the ones who posted that I had the same loose hose on my car. Since that time (Nov), I've had my PCV hoses replaced. So, when I went to look at my hoses just now, I noticed the short black hose connected up to the air intake just like you said. Anyway, it's good to know that all hoses are now accounted for.

Are you sure you are looking at the air cleaner? Braving the 20F, snow, ice, and a brisk gale from the North, I popped the hood and couldn't find any vacuum hoses attached to my V70. Nor are there any on my 854T. There is a single line coming from the AMM to the throttle body area. Check again.

I really appreciate you going out into the cold to check on this (being a native of Michigan and now living in the south, I get pangs of homesickness when I hear tell of snow). I am not crazy. Yes, the tubes or hoses of which I speak come out of the rear of the box that holds the air filter. Do the v70 and the v70R have different engine componenets? I went and looked under the hood of my friends 2000 v70. Same engine but configured differently, no vacuum hoses coming out of the air filter box. Go figure? I just ordered the haynes manual for this car from England. It seems that is the only place that sells them, what is up with that anyway?

I just went out to my S70 to check the hoses after re-reading your first post, and guess what? I found the same black hose that is 10 inches long going to absolutely nothing, just like yours. I suppose I've driven my car this way forever. I've never had any trouble, so I guess it's suppose to be that way. You are right...it's just dangling there under the air intake pipe that goes from the air cleaner down to the turbo. Maybe it's to let condensation out or something. I'd say you're good to go.

I think it goes somewhere. There is a vacuum on mine. I can't feel it with my hands but if I touch the open end to my tounge, it latches on fairly well. I think it is poor design to have a dangling vacuum hose. Why not just have a hole in the air box if it was supposed to be open. Perhaps you are right it is supposed to be there, but my money is on it going some place.

          thanks for the follow up.

There are hoses tucked away at the base of the air hose from the air cleaner box, near the turbo on mine...they are wrapped in a foamy tube and so it's not really visible that there are hoses...anyway, the hoses finally squirl under and go to the oil trap.

Can you take a picture and send it to me? Without a visual it's really hard to know which hoses you're talking about. I would suspect however that it may be one of the hoses that is suppose to go to the oil separator or what is generally called the oil "trap," located under the intake manifold, a PITA place to get to.
