Basically, the error code was 7XXX which in my little book was "Shift Solenoid A". Chippy's Transmissions said the solenoid was bad, and needed to be changed but they wouldn't do the job (too long)

Bill Grey Volvo said, 9 out of 10 times I need a new tranny, $3500 installed.. (yeah right!)... Any ideas? Is this common? Anyone else with problems, solutions?

Is it worth changing the solenoid? Could the clutch be gone?

1.- 100,000 miles on the car.

2.- clean title.

3.- Happens "occasionally" usually on long trips.

4.- Looses power in 1st-2nd gear, upper gears are fine...

5.- Can be fixed by turning the ignition on-off 3 or 4 times... but comes back randomly.

6.- ATF is a bit brownish, but looks good...

    Do you mean the car shifts ok when first started, then some time during your drive the flashing arrow comes on - and at that time you can't get the lower gears any more? Does the trans have to be hot for it to happen?

    Has the PNP switch been eliminated as a cause? Are you sure all the codes were read correctly?

    Usually (but of course not always), a bad shift solenoid would never work, not work sometimes.

    If you are not doing the work yourself, might be worth getting an opinion from another shop.
