Shift light blinking. Bad Shift Solenoid 850 1997

Basically, the error code was 7XXX which in my little book was "Shift Solenoid A". Chippy's Transmissions said the solenoid was bad, and needed to be changed but they wouldn't do the job (too long)

Bill Grey Volvo said, 9 out of 10 times I need a new tranny, $3500 installed.. (yeah right!)... Any ideas? Is this common? Anyone else with problems, solutions?

Is it worth changing the solenoid? Could the clutch be gone?

1.- 100,000 miles on the car.

2.- clean title.

3.- Happens "occasionally" usually on long trips.

4.- Looses power in 1st-2nd gear, upper gears are fine...

5.- Can be fixed by turning the ignition on-off 3 or 4 times... but comes back randomly.

6.- ATF is a bit brownish, but looks good...
