M56L Third-gear 850 1993

OK. I bought a '93 850 with 180K mi. that had a third-gear synchro issue, it would crunch every time I put it into third. So I got another trans with (supposedly) 30K mi. on it and spent a few days putting it in. The new one does the SAME FREAKIN' THING! But not as bad. This one I can at least get into third without the crunch, where as the other one would crunch every time.
Now that it's too late, it there any adjustment for that transaxel that I'm missing? Something that might be causing the selector to shift goofy and cause it to crunch? This is really driving me nuts and I was about to cry after I first drove it again and it crunched. It doesn't do it in any other gear. It won't crunch if I gently shift into third. I'm at wits end here and I want to cover all bases before I call the yard I got the trans from and start yelling at them.
Thanks to all in advance!

I am wondering if it is not the "gate" plate that is worn down. You know, the one on top of the tranny tunnel? That happened with my Wrangler... I "repositioned" the plate and the problems went away.
Now, why can't I find a good V70R with a manual tranny? Guess I am too poor.

You probably won't find one (manual V70-R) in the U.S....believe all they ever imported were auto's. Now, if you're outside of the U.S., you might have a chance, if you're persistent and lucky at the same time.

There are V70Rs in manuals out there... there's a guy that comes into my store that has a beautiful aqua colored one... blazing fast that one. They are just hard to find that's all, or you have to order one from a dealer, which is prohibitively costly.

The difference between this and the wrangler tranny it that this is fwd only as opposed to 4wd... there is no linkage tunnel.

I would love to find a good V70R with a 6spd... a heavenly car right there. Right up there with my dream '07 M5 Touring that is planned to come out :). Next time I have a half million dollars lying around (a hundred thousand for the M5 and V70R, then the other four-hundred K for the insurance on the M5 and for parts (brakes and tires mainly) and gas :P )

          The E60 BMW M5 is clutchless ONLY! 850 1993

7 speed SMG transmission. Both the sedan and touring wagon. There are rumors of a real manual for the M6 but not the M5.

The reviews from the M5 board (from owners) are that the SMG is OK on the track or highway but awful in traffic around town. The computers just can't shift as smoothly as an experienced foot.

So an E60 M5 will never see the inside of my garage!

(500 HP and 2 pedals ... any fool with a few thousand in his or her checking account can lease and drive one. M5 insurance MAY be $400,000 by the time they build up some claims history!)

The E55 AMG wagon is AT only, so that leaves the Audi S4 Avant and P2 V70R for wagon people who want to shift for themselves.

Since '06 is the LAST year for the V70R, RUN, don't walk over to your Volvo dealer!

There were none in the U.S. for model years '98-'00. From '01, you are right. Is someone has one that's a '98-'00, then he has a "foreign" model, most likely Canadian.

Where are you? You found a manual transmission for a '93 850 here in the states? If so, I have never heard of one...believe they were all automatics here. I hope you find your solution anyway...keep us posted.

I drive a base 1995 850 with 156k & the M56 manual transmisson, my brother drives a `93 850 GLT with a manual transmission and my dad drives a 1997 850 GLT with the very same M56 tranny. They're not impossible to find, but very very difficult. Well worth the effort, tho.

Haven't had a single problem with mine, other than a clutch replacement at 141k and flush/refilling the transmission at the same time with Redline MTL transmission fluid - made the previously chunky shifting smoov like butter. You might try that, as it's a relatively cheap and easy thing to do. As far as I know, there aren't any adjustments possible for the transmission. Is the clutch still in good shape? You may have a shifter linkage problem - you can see where they attach to the gearbox if you take out the air filter box. Otherwise, I'd go for the 1-2-4-5 route and bypass third if everything else works fine. Put the random-access gear selection feature of the transmission to work!

I'm in AZ. I was lucky enough to find one online in Indiana. The clutch is brand new (one of those "I don't want to have to take this fargging thing off again, so I'm changing the clutch"). The linkage appears to be ok, though I don't know of any problems with them as far as wearing or what wear looks like. A few hours after I put the new tranny and clutch in I drove from here (Tucson) to Phoenix (130mi.). It drove beautifully, except for the third gear. I got some R.L. MTL and put it in last night, and it still crunched, but it might have to work its way in a bit.

One thing though if you're looking to put a new m56 in... Make sure it's model year specific. Especially for '93. They changed the gear ratios in '94 and it will screw the ABS system all to hell. Just putting that out there. Any other questions?

A family of 850 owners...wowsa~! You guys must really like these cars...sort of makes me wish I had kept our 850. Got rid of it when things came up for repair, but now that I'm pretty active with my S70 and have learned a bunch about these cars, I know that those things were just routine and I would have been good until somewhere in the 2centinial-K mark before any other expensive repairs. So, have you had any major glaring repairs on any one of these 850's? Anyone in your family ever thought twice about owning one? ? ?
        Happy New Year btw,

Other than my dad getting rear-ended by a guy in a Toyota this year (it was pretty much totaled, the 850 got body work done with the insurance money) I think I'm the first of the three of us that needed the clutch replaced (mine has the most miles and I taught a few people to drive a stick). Other than preventative maintenence, a little wonkiness with the cruise control vacuum line, washer fluid T-valve and putting a can of R134a in every other year or so, they're all rock-solid. After I got mine, my dad was so impressed with the build quality and engineering, he talked my brother into one and got one himself.

It's also helped us to have another car to "borrow" known working parts off of to help troubleshoot problems, especially with the cruse control vacuum pump.

Way cool! Glad to hear you guys are all driving these... So, totalled the Toyota huh? How much damage to the 850? Also, what did the clutch replacement entail?

From what I heard, it was the rear bumper, tail light, trunk lid & a quarter panel. I never saw the wreck, as I moved out of state a few years ago.

The clutch replacement entailed about 3 days, $1200 and a six pack of beer. Fortunately I already had the Redline MTL when it went, so I just gave it to the shop to refill the transmission with (also when I gave them the beer. You *always* get better service when you bring your mechanic beer). The pressure plate fingers are what failed on my clutch - the lining wasn't completely gone yet, but it was close. Two of the fingers had broken tips and the throwout bearing couldn't push it to completely disengage from the transmission. I had been feeling a pulsing clutch pedal for many months beforehand. Apparently the way to test for this is to put the car in gear with the engine off, push the clutch in and start the car. If it creeps forward with the car in gear and clutch in (and no leaks from the hydraulic system), you know the pressure plate has failed.
