V70 fuel V70-XC70 1998

Hi

I read the interesting discussion on ethanol. I am looking at a V70 and it calls for using 91 octane. I have always used 87 octane in my '94 850 and get good mileage. Is that OK for the V70 (base model) or should you really use 91?

By the way, is $7000 a good price (retail) for a '98 V70 with 114000 miles? From all appearances in very good shape. It is a 5 speed and they are hard to find. I don't think there is a Haynes manual for the V70 (another interesting discussion awhile back!): problem?

Thanks

Kit

We have a 99 V70R, which will typically run hotter due to the high-pressure turbo, and we've been fine with mid-grade (89 octane) gas in it. It doesn't feel like we're suffering any loss of power. Same with the '99 C70, which has the low-pressure turbo.

For our '97 850 Base, standard-grade (87 octane) was fine.

$7000 for 100+ miles is the top end. Most people want an auto, but a 5 speed is better. If it has cloth, even better, the leather tends to wear faster. You should be able to get it for $6K.
a 70 is just an upgraded 850, so most of the fixes are the same. The brake pads are different, but still easy to do. The timing belt changed during the 98 year. 105K for the new ones and 70K for the old ones.
Same fuel requirements as for the 850.

Timing Belt changed from '99's to 102K mile interval changes. My '98 is still at 70K mile changes as per the dealer and my owner's manual.

Actually the tensioner changed in the middle of the model year, giving the timeing belt change a longer life.

Then I have the earlier tensioner. Klaus, do you know if at my next TB change, I replace the tensioner with the newer type, I could go 100K miles to my next TB change or not?

The engine will run on 87 octane. The knock sensor system will make sure the engine does not suffer from pre-ignition. However, you will experience power loss. Do the right thing, use the grade of gasoline that the Volvo engineers designed the engine to run on. The fuel economy will probably be slightly better than with 87 octane. The 5 speed should be pretty economical, especially for long highway trips. You are right about rare - I have a manual trans. V70 in Mississippi, and I have never seen another one anywhere in the South.
