Learning from my mistakes: reprise 850 1995

Thanks for all the humorous stories - I nearly fell over laughing about the hole in the spare! I definitely believe in being very careful when it comes to working on equipment, and definitely identify with the more sober responses regarding the potential for disaster. http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=1043246

To update, yes I did complete the tranny flush and oil change successfully (thanks for asking, Klaus). In addition, I have changed the front O2 sensor as indicated by an engine code (front bank slow response) and will change the top engine brace bushing with a poly replacement from FCP Groton this weekend. I also changed out the pollen filter with an activated charcoal filter (also from FCP Groton). The fit of the filter into the holder is less than optimal; slightly oversized so that the tabs do not lock in place. Anyone else have this experience?

I have driven the car 300 miles since the flush episode and have noticed an increase in power and gas mileage (up from 15.3 in town to 16.5, according to the car computer). The car shifts very well and is not smoking one bit, idle is smooth and quite, and acceleration is very responsive and effortless. As far as damage sustained, time will tell. We will be taking the car on another 350-400 mile trip to Santa Cruz for a two night stay and one day of fun on the boardwalk; it is my 10-year old son's birthday, and a good excuse for a test drive/road trip!

Finally,I have two questions:

First, I would like to replace my air filter with a K&N; what is the correct part number and where is the best price?

Second, I have noticed old oil deposits around the turbo exhaust outfeed tube clamp (not very wet, mostly oil that has attracted dust and dirt) and some around the tube that returns the oil to the pan (this is a little bit wet, but no drips on the ground). I had noticed these deposits well before I flushed the transmission and changed the motor oil, so they are unrelated. I have read some about these problems and the solutions on Bay 13 and OzBrick - what am I in for?

141k and still trucking.

    Hey Ten Sleep:

Make sure you get the right O2 sensor!! I just had a horrible experience that you can read about on my reply to bl from my orginal thread of Sat-Jan 14. I got the wrong sensor and had a hell of a time. Call the dealer and get the Volvo # from them, then cross it and get the Bosch #, then call Bosch USA on their 800# and confirm that is the sensor that pertains to your car. I looked at about 4 websites and for my 850 they had about 3-4 different Bosch numbers. Bosch USA DEFINITELY, knows which Bosch O2 sensor fits your car.

    Good Luck!!

Glad to hear you have no noises from the lifters, etc. Had me worried for a while!
Do like MIJ did and clean up the plastic piping and check the two small vacuum lines that go into the turbo line near the firewall. Be careful, those small nipples break easily!
It's also time to replace the gasket and O ring for the turbo return line. Procedures on Volvospeed. com.
Have fun in Santa Cruz, I love that town. Too bad the water is always too cold to swim in. Abalone is goooood!

    Here's where I bought mine:
    http://www.ajusa.com/cgi-bin/knfilters/products?ajr_skey=764a94c013b7d0c2c45ba4adf738284c
I searched long and hard for best price. I think shipping was free for me but it was 10 months ago, so not sure. All '95 850's use the same filter whether turbo or not. In regards to your slight oil around turbo intake hose, this is fairly normal. I took mine all loose and cleaned mine when I did a pcv hose change. Seems to still be a slight bit of seepage. Others will chime in as I'm curious about this myself.

Thanks for the tip on the filter; free shipping, good price, can't get any better than that! One more question: the headliner on the moon roof cover is sagging - anyone have any experience with fixing this (1995 850 turbo)?

I believe the dealer sells a headliner ahesive spray. You might ask them. A friend of mine has a Landrover which had a sagging head liner and she got some adhesive spray and low and behold it said Volvo on it.
