816 CD Malfunction S70

Well, nothing had gone wrong with our 1999 S70 for about a year. Needless to say I was getting very nervous.

So, I put in my usual mornig CD for the drive to the light rail, and ... nothing. It switched over to the radio. Pushed the eject button and nothing happened. I now have a perfectly functioning radio with "The Who - Live at Leeds" stuck in the CD portion. If I push the CD button, it shows a code that is a backwards 33, but will not switch from the radio, and will not eject. I even took off the top of the unit, but could not get it to release the CD.

Anyone have this happen? I assume the CD is probably dead.

Thanks for the help guys. Here's what happened.

I went to the site and got the bay13 instructions. Took out my unit and opened it up as instructed to get to the little circuit board. My unit does not have that board (or at least not where shown in the fix). I looked inside for anything similar, but found none. My unit is an 816, but I noticed that on the side of the unit it had "RY-816" stenciled on it. Mine must be either newer or older than the one shown in the picture. Maybe it is because mine is actually a rebuilt one, replaced about 1-1/2 years ago.

I finally just disconnected the power (at the unit), and then reconnected. It acted like a reboot, and after putting in the code everything worked fine. The CD ejected and it is playing fine now. Probably a Microsoft related glitch.

All is well. Hopefully that is my Volvo failure for the next year. Of course I have 110,000 miles on the car with the original ABS module.

Don't know what happened to your unit, but I've heard that if you try to put the edge of another CD in the cd player, it will activate the motor to pull-in/eject the CD and therefore will eject the cd that is in there. Give this a try and see if it works. It may make your cd player functional again. Another option is to disconnect your battery, enter your radio code and see if this resets everything. Last resort is to take the radio out and see if the connection in the back has somehow gotten dislodged. If all of these don't work, then the unit is bad and needs repair or replacement. Good luck.

I fixed one with the instructions at Volvospeed. Very easy.
BTW, excellent choice on the cd.....you need to get that to play. Deluxe Edition?

Not sure if my CD ia a deluxe edition, but I have two copies of the original record album release, one complete with the copies of the hotel room damage bills, etc.

The Live at Leeds Deluxe Edition is a fairly recent 2 cd release, with twice the original concert on disc 1, and then Tommy performed live(same night) on disc 2. It's amazing. It is my third copy of live at leeds. A must have item.

Well, back to Volvos now.......

Cheers
