CEL - P0116 S70 1998

I have a 98 S70, base model, 88K miles. I'm trying to start learning to do as much maintainence myself as I can. Anyway, the check engine light come on, and code for P0116. I know from the other posts that that is the code for Engine Coolant Temperature. I replaced the thermostat and ECT sensor, reset the CEL, but it came back on after about 50 miles. Temp guage always comes right to 3PM pretty quick, so I'm pretty sure the t-stat's not the problem. One thing was the replacement ECT Sensor was an 850 part. The parts store told me it should be the same part. Is that true, or could that have been the wrong sensor? If not the sensor, what else could be giving the code?

Another thing which has been happening the last couple days, which may or may not be related is its a little tougher to start (have to hold the key an extra second or two), and the engine fan comes on right away.

Also, I couldn't seem to find a consensus in other posts about whether the '98 S70 CEL will automatically reset after a few error-free trips.

Thanks very much for your help.

You have a faulty ECT sensor. I have had that happen to me once when using an off brand ECT. I never had any of the other ones I have installed give me any problems but I now only install factory Volvo ones. When the ECT takes a crap the F.I. ECU will run the cooling fan at half speed continuously to prevent an overheat situation, it is part of the default programming for this fault. The 9186486 ECT shows that it is applicable to the 960, 850, and all of the S/V/C and XC70 models.

The one that I had came in with the typical ect code and green crap leaking out of the front of the sensor. I replaced the sensor only to have the light come on the next day. When looking at it the next day I could make the fan come on and off by wiggling the connection right at the sensor, an ohm meter showed that it was going open when wiggled, I replaced it with a factory one and all is good again.

Thanks for the response. That's what I get for trying to save a few bucks. I noticed the replacement sensor wasn't an exact match for the original, and didn't quite fit perfectly. I guess I was just hoping it would work anyway. As it turns out though, I remembered that I didn't try resetting the CEL after replacing only the thermostat, so I just re-installed the original sensor, reset the light, and have gone about 3-4 trips, total of 300 miles, without it coming back on. So as of now, I second the other posts about the thermostat being the most likely cause.

      Thanks again for your info.
