resetting codes for OBDII cars - 1996 and later

I've seen several opinions about what it takes to reset codes in later model volvos with OBDII systems. I just want to make sure that disconnecting the battery for cars with the OBDII system WILL NOT reset the codes.

I've left the battery disconnected overnight. The Check Engine light keeps re-appearing after so many miles when I've done that(and the indicated repairs).

If the battery disconnect, in fact, DOES NOT reset the OBDII codes, next stop is Autozone to get the OBDII loaner box and use that.

anyone?

Thanks for your help in advance...........................

My experience has been that in general, a battery disconnect does not reset OBD II fault codes although I did have it work once. Sometimes the light will go out on its own once a successful repair has been done. Just replaced the secondary air system blower on our 96 850. The CEL when out on its own after the next start up before I could reset it at. Believe Autozone will reset your car for free.

      sB,

Thank You for your quick response!! Seems that I'm going the correct way.

I went to Autozone. They said THEY cannot reset codes on any car. I can though given the right stuff. I did "rent" the OBDII meter from them(very new condition) for $181. That is fully refundable once I take it back. Final cost $0.00. HEAR THAT ....$0

The volvo shop here in Abq is no longer going to see my shadow. IV did an incomplete repair on my 850. For what they provided me at $350, I'm going to visit Pepboys first from now on. They apparently got too much volvo business (and attitude) since the local dealer has been even worse! Forget your roots, loose the future.........

sB, once again, thanks for your help.

Glad to hear it! I know the feeling about "local dealers". Mine would sell his mother if there was a dollar in it. Anything you go in for, doesn't matter how minor, is gona cost you $3-$500. They always find a way to screw ya especially if they think you don't know anything about your car. A good example is the ABS computer problem on 850's which have failure rate of ~100%. Victor Rocha repairs and upgrdes the units for about $140.USD If you take an 850 in to a dealer with ABS light on, you'll be lucky to get outa there for under $1000. and they'll install a unit like you had that will also fail. That's why the BB forum is tops!

sB - you are so right on.

I've tallied up over $2,000 in repairs since I bought my 1996 850 new. That's $200 per year - BEYOND the regular maintence items. I also had the ABS go out. Since it's my wife's car, I know it's been driven lightly. It has LESS than 100k miles. I'd certainly expect part failures if we were towing a horse trailer or weekend racing.

I'm going to need to liquidate it before summer in case the AC decides to go out - which does not function on high anymore.

          tick, tick, tick......

To the credit of this BB, the folks here have been great! The tips I've gotten here have saved me many hours of frustration and certainly $$$$$
