Getting a second key S70

I wanted to get a second key for my 1998 S70. The dealer is charging $125 !!! The guy says 1998's already have the immobilizer chip. So, making the key is $35 + $30 for immobilizer chip + $60 to program the key for my car ! What a ripoff!

Is there another place I could have this done ?

    Getting a second key S70

I recently just got another key for my 98 S70 cut. Don't even mess with the dealerships if you don't have to - Call around your local locksmiths, I'm sure that one of them will have a machine to cut high security keys. If they ask, be sure to tell that it's a 4-track security key. To give you an idea of how much money you'll save doing this, I had a key made for a mere $30.

Go to another dealer....no immobolizer chip in there...they're either lying or don't know what they're talking about. I ordered one for my S70 (also '98) and it cost me $25.00 from the dealer. All I needed was to give them my VIN# and in a couple of days (after they ordered it from their supply house) I picked it up. Prices for these keys and what they tell you seems to vary greatly from dealer to dealer.

Now, if you're talking about the remote, there is some truth to what you were saying. You can actually get one from eBay (make sure it's identical to your original one) and take it to the dealer, claiming it quit working...never tell them it was from eBay, and they will have to reprogram all of your remotes along with the new one, but still, my dealer charged $35 total for the remotes' reprogramming. Up to 3 remotes can be programmed for your car at the same time.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses. That's what I thought too. the key isn't big enough to hold a chip it seems, but his printout gave some code. Time to call another dealer.

Yes, I have another remote. Good thing the printout had the remote code too. I know an indy who will reprogram it for free.

Those keys are laser cut and they contact their key cutting company (I think the companies name is Huf) who cut keys only when told to. They send it to the dealer and viola! A new key. The same thing is done for Volvo Trucks but the only charge $11.
