Parts (timing belt) 99 s70 S70

Hey All,

Anyone know what exact parts I need to change the timing belt on a normally aspirated 99 s70. Of course I need the timing belt but want to get everything ordered before I get into it.

Thanks,
john

Go to www.volvospeed.com then to tech info. That takes you to bay13. It has all of the info for setting up the manual tensioner. I did one a couple of weeks ago and it was no big deal at all. It's a good idea to replace the rollers and tensioner. The water pump should be okay until the next belt change.

Good luck with it.

FYI Waterpump life is roughly 120K or less S70

so without knowing the mileage of the car I cannot tell what to do re WP.

If more than 1ooK then replace the WP, and consider the crank seal,
tensioner, rollers as you mentioned.

Hmm...I must have been misinformed on the water pump's lifespan. My 850 has 137 K, and is due for the belt to be changed. For the extra $100, I'll go ahead and change the pump while I'm in there.

WP is not $100, it is only $50 at autohausaz.com S70

at 137K, if I were you I would do:

1. TB and all its associated components:
- rollers x 2
- tensioner
- seals x 3 (camshaft x 2; crank x1)

2. WP

3. Drive belt

4. Drive belt pulley.

It is the same labor because in order to get to the TB, one has to remove the drviebelt.

CN,

Is that $50 waterpump an OE Volvo one or a Hepu brand? I'd rather have the OE one myself, but that's just me. How hard are the cam seals to change? I was afraid of messing with the pulleys with the T belt removed. Use FCP's orange seals?

Thanks,
Dave

Very quality part from autohausaz.com S70

Dave,

There is no such thing as OE. Car mfg's make ONLY engine and chassis (sometimes transmission). The rest comes from third party. As an example, I also have a BMW which uses the same suppliers as Volvo, VW, Audi etc.

- Bosch...ECU, spark plugs
- Mahle.... Pistons/rings
- Behr...Radiator, thermostat
- ZF...transmission
- Brake...ATE
- Mann....Air Filters, Cabin Filters.
etc. etc. and etc.

Now as an example: Behr radiator for my BMW:
- From autohausaz.com....$170.00
- From BMW dealer......$380.00 (EXACTLY the same but wers the BMW logo).

Volvo does the same trick, put a Volvo logo on a part made by 3rd party and make money.

So for 1/2 less money you can get EXACTLY the same part from a 3rd supplier.

In fact for the European market, GRAF, HEPU, GEBA, GK are all very reputable Water Pump makers. Sometimes, BMW switches back and forth between different suppliers, depending on who gives them a cheaper deal.

In summary:
1. you cannot go wrong with Hepu.

2. Cam + Crank shaft seals, consult a manual, but replacing it requires:
a. Cam and Crank removal tool such as:
http://www.sirtools.com/volvo.htm

b. Seal removal tool

c. Oil Seal Arbor, or a large socket same size as the seal(s)

Take not to damage sealing surface during removal. If you have not done it before, get some help from someone who knows the stuff.

I guess you are approaching 105K miles. One timing belt, a roller, and a manual tensioner. If you have never done this before, before you order any parts, investigate all procedures on how to change the belt. And then find information about installing a manual tensioner -- there is a very detailed description on the web somewhere in PDF format. Try IPD or Bay13.
